What the 3rd grade tests check

The math preview asks six questions across five skills:

The reading preview is one short story about Nia, who waits two weeks for sunflower seeds to sprout. The six questions ask for the main idea, the meaning of “appeared” from context, what happened just before Nia ran inside, how she felt, which detail shows she was patient, and why she watered only when the soil was dry.

What changes in 3rd grade

In math, 3rd grade is where multiplication and division become the main work and fractions first appear as equal parts of a whole. Two of the six math questions are about multiplication for that reason.

In reading, the work moves from sounding out words to understanding what a passage means. Questions start asking “how do you know?” Half of the reading questions ask your child to infer or point to evidence instead of repeating what the text says.

What a wrong answer points to

The choice your child picked often tells you more than the score.

Signs your child should start lower or higher

There is no 4th grade preview. If your child gets six of six on a 3rd grade preview with no guesses, run the full diagnostic with 4th grade as the comparison grade.

The full diagnostic asks 25 questions in about 30 minutes and ends with a report that names the skills to work on first. Free to start, no account needed.

3rd grade placement questions

My child is finishing 2nd grade. Should they take the 3rd grade test?

Yes. The 3rd grade preview shows whether 2nd grade foundations such as place value and two-step addition and subtraction are ready to carry forward. Expect some misses on multiplication and fractions, since 3rd grade is where those are taught.

Can I read the math questions aloud?

Yes. The math test is checking math, so reading a word problem aloud is fine. On the reading test, read only the directions.

When should I give it?

Before you start new material, or whenever the current book feels too easy or too hard. The printable worksheet a few months later shows whether the gaps closed.
