Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how TheHomeschoolingCompany collects, uses, shares, and protects information when families use our website, parent tools, learner dashboard, personalized mentor, curriculum generation, placement diagnostics, attendance and recordkeeping tools, compliance document tools, and related services.
The service is built for homeschool families. We ask whether a parent or guardian is entering learner information or a student is signing up independently. Students aged 13 or older can create their own accounts; a parent or guardian must authorize a child’s use before a learner under 13 can use the learning features.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information needed to run the product and personalize the learning experience.
Account and contact information
- Name, email address, login provider identifiers, account type, authentication session information, and support messages.
- Parent or guardian contact information used for account access, learner linking, weekly summaries, invite emails, and service notices.
Learner and homeschool profile information
- Learner name or display name, grade level, age range, timezone, interests, goals, selected subjects, learning preferences, and parent-provided homeschool profile details.
- Guardian link codes and relationship records used to connect a parent or guardian to a learner account.
Learning, assessment, and record data
- Placement diagnostic responses and reports, skill tree progress, lesson progress, article interactions, quizzes, practice answers, project submissions, rubric feedback, mentor context, notebook entries, attendance check-ins, uploaded work samples and evidence (including images, audio, and video), generated documents, transcripts, schedules, and parent dashboard activity.
- AI-generated curriculum artifacts, project briefs, reading materials, feedback, summaries, and document drafts created for your account.
Billing and transaction information
- Subscription status, plan, checkout metadata, customer identifiers, invoices, payment status, and limited billing details returned by our payment processor. We do not store full card numbers.
Device, usage, and analytics information
- Browser type, device information, pages or features used, approximate location derived from network information, referral source, timestamps, performance events, error events, and product analytics events.
- Optional Google and Meta marketing measurement is restricted to signed-in parent and institution accounts on eligible public pages. It stays off for learner accounts and visitors whose account type is unknown. For eligible adults in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, these tags stay off until allowed; elsewhere they stop when declined. They do not run on learner, parent dashboard, curriculum, article, transcript, institution dashboard, or admin surfaces.
- We do not use session replay to record browser sessions. We use product events and error reports to understand feature use and diagnose problems.
2. How We Use Information
- Create and secure accounts, authenticate users, and route parents, guardians, learners, and institutions to the correct experience.
- Personalize lessons, projects, reading, mentor support, practice, feedback, schedules, placement diagnostics, and curriculum paths.
- Use uploaded work samples and evidence, together with answers and feedback, to maintain a learning history, assess growth over time, and adapt future instruction to the learner's progress.
- Generate parent-facing records such as progress summaries, attendance views, transcripts, compliance documents, and weekly learning summaries.
- Process billing, subscriptions, trials, invoices, refunds when applicable, and account entitlement checks.
- Send transactional emails, account notices, guardian invites, signup follow-ups, weekly summaries when enabled, and support replies.
- Improve reliability, debug errors, prevent abuse, protect the service, and understand which product flows are working for families.
- Comply with legal obligations, enforce our Terms, and respond to lawful requests.
3. AI Processing
TheHomeschoolingCompany uses AI systems to generate and adapt curriculum, explain concepts, grade or give feedback, summarize learning activity, recommend next steps, and produce draft homeschool records. To do that, we may send relevant prompts, learner context, answers, project work, article context, profile details, or record fields to AI infrastructure and model providers.
We limit AI prompts to information that is useful for the requested educational task. AI output can be incomplete or incorrect, so parents and guardians should review generated lessons, grades, documents, and compliance materials before relying on them.
4. Children and Parent Rights
A parent or guardian may enter a child’s information to set up a learner profile. Before a learner under 13, or a managed learner whose age is not yet known, can use learning features, a parent or guardian must open a secure email link, read our direct privacy notice, and affirm that they are the parent or legal guardian and consent to the described collection and use. Approval does not require signing in or copying a code. Permission covers either the requesting learner or the learners linked to the parent’s account, as identified on the approval page. We send a confirmation and a later reminder with instructions to revoke consent. Learners known to be aged 13 or older can use independent or parent-managed accounts without this under-13 consent step.
The notice covers learner profile details, interests, activity, answers, projects, messages, and optional audio used to provide and personalize education. Our service providers process this information for the service. We do not sell children’s personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or provide it for others’ independent purposes.
Parents can revoke permission in their Parent account under Learner privacy settings. Revocation stops access for learners who require this consent, including existing sessions, but does not delete completed work. Parents can request access, correction, export, or deletion through their account tools or by emailing andrew@thehomeschoolingcompany.com. We verify requests before acting.
5. Student Records and FERPA
Most family accounts use TheHomeschoolingCompany directly as a homeschool tool, not as a public school, private school, or accredited school of record. In that context, FERPA may not apply to us by default.
If an institution, school, district, co-op, or similar organization uses the service under a separate agreement and that agreement makes us a service provider for education records, we handle those records according to that agreement and applicable student privacy requirements.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell personal information. We share information only as needed to provide, secure, improve, or legally operate the service, and to run the optional advertising measurement described in the California Privacy Choices section below, which you can turn off at any time.
- With parents, guardians, linked learners, or institutional administrators according to account permissions and relationship links.
- With infrastructure, authentication, database, hosting, storage, analytics, email, payment, AI, and support providers that help operate the service.
- With payment processors for checkout, subscription management, billing, fraud prevention, and tax or accounting records.
- With legal, safety, or law enforcement recipients when required by law, when necessary to protect rights and safety, or when needed to enforce our Terms.
- With a successor organization if we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate protection of user information.
7. Service Providers
Our current app and infrastructure may use providers such as Supabase for authentication, database, and storage; Vercel for hosting and analytics; Stripe for payments; PostHog for product analytics; Google Analytics and Meta for consent-based marketing measurement on public pages; OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, and similar model infrastructure for AI features; and Brevo or similar email providers for service emails. Provider usage may change as the product evolves, but we choose providers to support the service rather than to sell learner data.
8. Data Retention and Deletion
We keep information for as long as needed to provide the service, maintain records requested by the family, operate billing and accounting, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, satisfy legal obligations, and improve safety and reliability.
While an account is active, we may keep uploaded work samples and evidence so families can review past work and the service can track learning across lessons and over time.
If you ask us to delete an account, we will delete its uploaded work samples and evidence from active storage and delete or de-identify other account data where reasonably possible. Some records may remain where retention is required for legal, billing, security, backup, abuse-prevention, or dispute-resolution purposes.
9. Security
We use technical and organizational measures intended to protect personal information, including authenticated access controls, encrypted transport, provider-side storage protections, permission checks, and operational monitoring. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so families should use strong passwords, protect account access, and avoid entering unnecessary sensitive information.
10. Your Choices
- You can update many account and learner profile details in the app.
- You can cancel subscriptions through the billing flow or by contacting support.
- You can request access, correction, export, deletion, or restriction of personal information by contacting us.
- You can unsubscribe from non-essential emails using the unsubscribe link or by contacting us. We may still send transactional and account-security emails.
- Eligible signed-in parent and institution accounts can allow or decline optional Google and Meta measurement and change the choice from this page. Learner accounts and visitors with unknown account type keep these tags off. We honor Global Privacy Control by keeping tags off, and store your choice on your device.
11. California Privacy Choices
We do not sell personal information for money, and we never sell or share learner personal information for advertising. However, when optional Google and Meta advertising tags are active, the identifiers and page activity they receive may count as sharing personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under the California Consumer Privacy Act.
California residents can opt out of that sharing at any time using the Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link in our footer, or the privacy choice box on this page. Both set the same preference, and we honor Global Privacy Control as a valid opt-out signal without requiring any further action.
California residents also have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request a copy of it, to request correction or deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. Requests can be sent to the contact address below. We may need to verify a request before acting on it.
12. International Users
The service is operated from the United States and is intended primarily for U.S. homeschool families. If you use the service from another country, your information may be processed in the United States or other locations where our providers operate.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the product, providers, or legal requirements change. When we make material changes, we will update the Last Updated date and, when appropriate, provide additional notice in the app or by email.
