Free Math and Reading Placement Tests
Choose a grade and subject for a free placement-test preview with real questions, instant results, and printable practice.
What a placement test tells you
A placement test answers one question: where should your child start next? It samples a few skills from one grade so you can see which are solid and which need work before new material goes on top.
A grade-level test asks whether your child matches a grade overall. A placement test asks what your child is ready to learn next, which is what decides the book or unit you open on Monday.
Many curricula publish placement tests keyed to their own lesson numbers. Those help you pick a spot inside that program. These tests check skills directly, so the result holds whatever curriculum you use.
The free preview and the full diagnostic
3rd, 5th, and 7th grade each have a short preview in math and in reading. For a fuller picture, or a grade without a preview, use the full diagnostic.
- Free preview: 6 multiple-choice questions for one grade and subject, about 5 to 10 minutes, with no account, email, or timer. Your child sees the score and an explanation for every answer right away.
- Full diagnostic: 25 multiple-choice questions in the subject and comparison grade you choose, about 30 minutes. It covers math, reading, science, history, and other subjects, with comparison grades from 3rd through 12th.
- The diagnostic report shows a score, an estimated level, a placement estimate, and the skills that look like gaps. You start without an account and enter an email when the report is ready.
Six questions can show a pattern, not settle a placement. Use the preview to see whether a grade looks close, then the full diagnostic before you buy a year of material.
How to give a placement test at home
- Pick the grade your child just finished or is finishing now. If you are unsure, start lower. A strong score there tells you to move up.
- Have your child work alone, in a quiet spot, with scratch paper. Written work often shows more than the final answer.
- Read the directions aloud if that helps, but do not define words, hint, or point at a choice. The result only helps if it shows what your child does alone.
- Tell your child guessing is allowed but to say so, and mark those questions. A lucky guess is not evidence of a skill.
- Let your child reread a passage as often as they like. Rereading is a normal strategy.
- The math previews need no calculator. The full math diagnostic allows a basic one.
How to read the result
The preview sorts scores into three bands. Five or six correct is a strong signal for that grade. Three or four means the foundations are there with a few skills to review. Two or fewer means the prerequisites deserve a look first.
Which questions were missed matters more than how many. Open the answer explanations and read the skill named on each one.
- One missed skill: a narrow gap. Teach that skill directly and keep working at this grade.
- Several misses in one area, such as fractions or inference: start that area earlier, even if the rest of the subject stays on grade.
- Misses across every skill: take the preview one grade lower, or run the full diagnostic at a lower grade.
- Six of six with no guesses: try the next grade up before you decide.
A mixed result is not a bad result. It tells you what to teach first.
Why math and reading can land at different levels
Math and reading build on different skills. A child who reads widely can be a grade ahead in comprehension and still be unsure of multiplication facts, and the reverse is just as ordinary.
Place each subject on its own. One grade across every subject bores your child in the strong one or buries them in the weak one.
Printable placement tests
Every preview page has a free PDF worksheet with six new questions and an answer key. Use it for a second check a few weeks later, or for a child who works better on paper.
The full diagnostic can be printed too. On paper it asks all 40 questions in its bank instead of the 25 chosen on screen. When your child finishes, photograph the answer sheet and upload it. You see everything that was read before anything is scored.

Placement test questions
Is the placement test free?
Yes. The previews and worksheets are free, and the full diagnostic is free to start. A paid plan only comes in if you want TheHomeschoolingCompany to build a curriculum from the result, and it starts with a 14-day free trial.
Do I need to give an email?
Not for the previews. The full diagnostic starts without an account; you enter an email when the report is ready and can create an account to save it.
How long does it take?
About 5 to 10 minutes for a preview and about 30 minutes for the full diagnostic. Neither is timed.
Which grades are covered?
Previews cover 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade math and reading. For 4th, 6th, and 8th grade, the list above goes straight to the full diagnostic, which compares against any grade from 3rd through 12th.
What if my child is between grades?
Start with the lower grade. If your child gets five or six right, take the next grade up.
Does the result change my child's grade?
No. The report is planning guidance. It does not change a grade or enroll your child in anything, and if you start a trial you can change the starting point later.
Is this a standardized or state test?
No. It is a planning tool from TheHomeschoolingCompany, not an official state, MAP Growth, or other standardized test, and not a diagnosis.
