What the 5th grade tests check
The math preview puts most of its weight on fractions and decimals, because they carry most of 5th grade:
- Decimal place value: which of 4.205, 4.25, 4.052, and 4.025 is greatest.
- Adding fractions with unlike denominators: 2/3 + 1/6.
- Multiplying a whole number by a mixed number: 3 × 2 1/4.
- Volume: a rectangular prism 4 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 5 cm high.
- The coordinate plane: which number in (2, 5) tells how far to move right.
- Multi-step money problems: two amounts collected and one amount spent, in dollars and cents.
The reading passage is about Leo, whose cardboard bridge sags at a science fair. He studies the weak spot, adds a triangle support, and the bridge holds twice as much. The questions ask for the theme, what wanting to hide the bridge shows about Leo, why his notebook heading matters, how the passage is organized, what “the weak spot” means, and which action fixed the bridge.
Why fractions decide 5th grade math
In 5th grade, fractions stop being shaded shapes and become numbers you add, subtract, and multiply. Adding 2/3 and 1/6 needs equivalent fractions first. Multiplying 3 × 2 1/4 needs a clear sense of what a mixed number is.
The same skills feed 6th grade ratios and 7th grade proportions, so a shaky fraction foundation is worth fixing now.
In reading, the step is from main idea to theme. A main idea is what a passage is about. A theme is what it teaches, and your child has to put it in their own words.
What a wrong answer points to
- Picked 4.205 as greatest: your child may be treating the longer decimal as the bigger one. Line the numbers up by place value and compare digit by digit.
- Picked 3/9 for 2/3 + 1/6: added the tops and added the bottoms. That is a common fraction error, and it means equivalent fractions need review.
- Picked 6 1/4 for 3 × 2 1/4: multiplied the whole number and dropped the fraction.
- Picked 12 or 20 cm³ for the volume: multiplied two dimensions instead of three.
- Picked 5 on the coordinate question: mixed up the horizontal and vertical coordinates.
- In reading, got the detail questions but missed the theme: your child can find information but is not yet stating what a story teaches.
Signs your child should start lower or higher
- Start lower in math if your child cannot say why 2/3 equals 4/6, or still multiplies multi-digit numbers slowly and with frequent errors. Run the full diagnostic at 4th grade.
- Start lower in reading if the passage feels long to your child, or they answer from memory of the first sentence without looking back.
- Move higher in math if fractions and decimals are both solid and your child sets up the money problem without help. Run the full diagnostic at 6th grade.
- Move higher in reading if your child states the theme in their own words and backs it up with a detail without being asked.
Check fractions and theme in full
The full diagnostic asks 25 questions in about 30 minutes. Choose 5th grade, or 4th or 6th if the preview pointed that way. Free to start, no account needed.
5th grade placement questions
My child did well on everything except fractions. What should I do?
Keep the rest of math at 5th grade and back fraction work up to equivalent fractions and common denominators. Fractions are the 5th grade skill worth slowing down for.
Can my child use a calculator?
Not on the preview. None of the questions need one, and scratch paper is useful. The full math diagnostic allows a basic calculator, because it is checking reasoning, not arithmetic speed.
Does the reading test check vocabulary?
One question asks for the meaning of a phrase from context. The preview does not measure vocabulary breadth, decoding, or reading speed, so watch for those in everyday reading.
My child is finishing 4th grade. Which test should they take?
Take the 5th grade preview. Expect some misses on fraction operations and volume, since 5th grade teaches them. If most questions are missed, run the full diagnostic at 4th grade.
