What the 7th grade tests check
The math preview asks one question in each of six skills:
- Proportions: a map scale of 1 inch to 12 miles, with two towns 3.5 inches apart.
- Rational numbers: adding a negative and a positive decimal, -6.4 + 2.9.
- Equations: solving 4x - 7 = 21.
- Probability: the chance of drawing blue from 3 red, 5 blue, and 2 green marbles.
- Geometry: the area of a circle with a 4 cm radius.
- Percent: the sale price of a $60 jacket at 25% off.
The reading test uses a nonfiction passage about neighbors turning vacant city lots into gardens. It checks the central idea, why the author calls trust the gardens' “greatest crop,” which sentence admits a limitation, what can be inferred about the gardeners, the meaning of “vacant,” and which detail supports a specific claim.
Proportional reasoning is the center of 7th grade
Three of the six math questions, the map, the discount, and the probability, rest on one idea: comparing a part to a whole, or scaling one quantity by another. That idea runs through 7th grade and sets up slope and linear equations after it.
The equation and negative-number questions check the other half of the year: working with signed numbers and solving for an unknown. These are the skills pre-algebra assumes.
Reading in 7th grade moves toward argument. The questions ask how the author makes a point, not only what the point is: why a metaphor was chosen, and where the author qualifies a claim.
What a wrong answer points to
- Picked 15.5 miles on the map: added instead of multiplying. Picked 36: multiplied by 3 and dropped the half.
- Picked -9.3 or 3.5 for -6.4 + 2.9: sign rules are shaky. Practice on a number line before moving on to equations.
- Picked x = 3.5: subtracted 7 instead of adding it. Your child knows there are steps but not why each one undoes the last.
- Picked 25.12 cm² for the circle: used the circumference formula. Picked 12.56: multiplied pi by the radius without squaring it.
- Picked $15 for the jacket: found the discount and stopped. Picked $75: added the discount.
- In reading, got the vocabulary and inference questions but missed the limitation question: your child reads for content and has not yet started reading for how an argument is built.
Signs your child should start lower or higher
- Start lower in math if fraction and decimal arithmetic still slows your child down, since 7th grade work assumes it. Run the full diagnostic at 6th grade.
- Start lower in reading if your child can summarize a story but struggles with nonfiction, or cannot point to the sentence that supports an answer.
- Move higher in math if your child solves the equation and the percent problem easily and explains the map question as a rate. Run the full diagnostic at 8th grade.
- Move higher in reading if your child questions an author's claims unprompted and notices what a passage leaves out.

7th grade placement questions
Is this an algebra readiness test?
Not by itself. It includes equations and proportional reasoning, which algebra builds on, but it is not a dedicated Algebra 1 readiness test. For a wider read, run the full math diagnostic at 8th grade.
Why is the reading passage nonfiction?
7th grade reading leans on argument and evidence, which an informational passage shows clearly. The full diagnostic can sample literary reading as well.
Can my child use scratch paper or a calculator?
Scratch paper, yes. The written steps show whether an error came from the concept or from arithmetic. The preview questions can be worked by hand. The full math diagnostic allows a basic calculator.
